Leterme likely to be Belgium's new PM: report

BRUSSELS, Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Belgian Foreign minister Yves Leterme is likely to succeed the newly elected President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, a Belgian TV reported here on Tuesday.

After facilitator Wilfried Martens hands his report of mission to the Belgian King, Albert II, Van Rompuy will officially step down as Belgian Prime minister, RTV TVI reported, quoting official sources.

It will allow Leterme, who was predecessor of Van Rompuy as Belgian prime minister, to meet with the King and subsequently take office.

Van Rompuy was elected the first president of the European Council on Nov. 19 at an informal European Union summit.

The appointment of a new Belgian prime minister will involve a reshuffling of government positions, but there will not be any major changes, the four main political parties will keep their portfolios, according to the report.

It said that current vice-prime minister of the CD&V party, Steven Vanackere, is likely to fill the post of foreign minister to replace Leterme.

Official appointment ceremonies should take place on Wednesday at the King's Laeken castle, according to the report.
